Festive season is round the corner. So I thought of posting an authentic south Indian sweet - The broken wheat payasam/kheer. The ingredients and method is very simple. This is a highly nutritious sweet and will be liked by everyone in the house - kid to the old.
Ingredients:
Broken Wheat - 1 cup
Coconut milk - 1 cup
Plain milk - 1/2 cup
Elachi powder - 1/2 tsp
Jaggery - 1/2 cup
cashew nuts chopped - 2 tsp
Raisin - 2 tsp
Ghee - 2 tsp
Cloves - 2
Method:
Cook broken wheat till tender( Either you can pressure cook or you can cook in a pan lid covered)
Next in a pan, add jaggery and milk , bring to a boil. Add coconut milk, elachi powder and cloves to this sweetened milk. Next add the cooked broken wheat and continue cooking in low flame for another 10 min with lid closed.
On the other side, heat ghee in the a small pan and roast cashew nuts and raisins. Add this to the boiling kheer and serve the kheer/payasam for the entire household either hot or cold. Its delicious and healthy.
